游戏的背景设置在20世纪20年代的巴黎，玩家扮演的是Gus MacPherson，他以前在纽约当私家侦探，后来不知什么原因，他卖掉了手枪，离开了纽约，来到巴黎的左岸，改行做了画家。直到有一天，当他遇到了贵妇人Sophia Blake时，他的风流放荡的日子也就到头了，这位夫人似乎被什么事情困扰了。原来最近巴黎旅馆发生了一起谋杀案，被害的是她的姐姐和姐夫。当时MacPherson已经穷困潦倒了，Sophia答应他只要能够破案，就会付给他丰厚的酬金。于是MacPherson放下了画笔，重操旧业。 为了追查凶手的下落，他经常出没于巴黎各大大小小的夜总会。这项工作并不简单，这对夫妻的事似乎与宗教扯上了关系，游戏中经常会出现一些含含糊糊的神秘启示，这并不是一般的谋杀案，很快MacPherson就发现自己似乎被卷入了一场阴谋。让事情变得更奇怪的是，当他每次接近那些与谋杀案有关的人或地方时，他的脑海中就会出现一幕幕可怕的血腥画面。
